The Barking and Dagenham 2037 draft Local Plan has reached the next stage of the statutory examination process: the Main Modifications consultation. It is anticipated that soon after this consultation has concluded, the Council will be able to formally adopt the Plan (subject to the Inspectors’ report).
Having an adopted Local Plan is essential to attract investment and deliver the Borough’s ambitious growth plans over the next 15 years for housing, jobs and supporting social infrastructure e.g., health, schools and green space.
The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Local Plan (the submission Local Plan) was submitted to the Secretary of State on the 21 December 2021. The Plan has since had an initial round of consultation (the ‘Initial Main Modifications’ consultation) and gone through both preliminary and main hearing sessions (July 2022 and October and November 2023 respectively). Following the latest round of hearings, the Inspectors’ provided their Post-Hearings Letter setting out the next steps (which include this consultation).
We are now holding what we anticipate will be one final round of consultation on the main changes we believe are needed to the Plan to make ‘Sound’ in Planning terms, and capable of reaching the final stage of adoption. Please read our Consultation Explanatory Note before submitting a response to this consultation as it contains important information on the process. Please note, we are only consulting on the changes we are proposing to make to the submitted Plan and the submitted Policies Map.

This Main Modifications Consultation will run from Monday 19th February 2024 until 23:59 on Sunday 14th April 2024. Following this, all responses will be submitted to the planning inspectors for their consideration. Please note, responses to this consultation will be published online, although personal information (excluding names) will be redacted.
