Last week Be First and their contractor, Willmott Dixon celebrated the completion of 124 affordable homes in the Gascoigne neighbourhood. The new block is another step in the Council’s battle against climate change as it is the first net zero carbon building to be delivered by Be First, which is managing the redevelopment on behalf of Barking and Dagenham Council.
The housing block in the redeveloping Gascoigne neighbourhood, is part of the over 900 homes due to be completed in the first six months of this year by Be First, a great achievement in the current economic climate.
Joining the handover event were Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Councillor Darren Rodwell, Steve Kitchen from Willmott Dixon the project contractors, and Tim Porter and Geoff Raw from Be First.
Tim Porter, Delivery Director at Be First, said:
“It’s a tremendous achievement by Willmott Dixon to have completed this building in the current economic climate. This is a vital step in our march against climate change and our pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030, thereby becoming the Green Capital of the Capital.”
Cllr Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said:
“This marks a significant milestone for our ambition of sustainable and affordable housing for Barking and Dagenham. It’s testament to our commitment of combating climate change while providing quality housing for our residents. These 124 net zero carbon homes are not just buildings; they’re beacons of progress in our journey towards a greener future for all.”
Steve Kitchen, Operations Director at Willmott Dixon, said:
“It is fantastic to be handing over a further 124 affordable homes for the local community of Gascoigne, continuing the success of the 434 homes we’ve delivered alongside Be First already. These homes will provide the residents with an incredibly energy efficient, sustainable household ensuring they are future-climate ready and optimising the health and wellbeing of those living within them.”
The 124 homes feature one-, two- and three-bedroom flats which all meet London Affordable rent criteria.
The new Gascoigne neighbourhood will be one of the most sustainable 15-minute neighbourhoods in London.
It will feature: Three new parks, tree lined streets and courtyards and walkable route, Community gardens and orchards, Photovoltaic panels on roof spaces.
