More new, affordable, rental homes are nearing completion as part of a £36.1m regeneration project in the Gascoigne neighbourhood in Barking, east London.

To celebrate the Topping out of the block that will bring 102 new homes to the area, Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, joined contractors Willmott Dixon, on site.

The additional 102 new homes will be a mix of one and two-bedroom units which are being added to the eastern side of the Gascoigne neighbourhood and will complement the award-winning regeneration of the whole neighbourhood to create more – and better quality – housing, which is safe, well-ventilated and more energy-efficient.

The topping out involved Cllr Darren Rodwell and Steve Kitchen, Director at Willmott Dixon, the project contractors.  The development will also accommodate a new, 700 sqm public park with plants, benches, picnic tables and trees. The block will also provide five on-street parking spaces as well as 186 cycle spaces and is due to be completed next spring.

The new homes add to the 815 homes already being delivered by Be First on the eastern side of the Gascoigne neighbourhood.  A total of 1,016 new homes have been built across the whole neighbourhood to date.

Councillor Darren Rodwell, Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, said: “We are committed to building new high-quality homes for the people and communities in Barking and Dagenham, and this latest phase of the development at Gascoigne will provide some much-needed rental accommodation.

“This project is part of our wider commitment to build 50,000 new homes by 2037 across the borough. We look forward to seeing this development become a reality as it will further increase our supply of good quality housing in the borough.”

Tim Porter, Director of Delivery, Be First said: “We are committed to making Barking a great place to live, work and raise a family. The Gascoigne Estate is our flagship regeneration project and we are committed to delivering excellent quality homes and public realm. As part of our mission to increase jobs and boost opportunities in the area, we’ve ensured several apprentices are hired across the regeneration of Gascoigne Estate.”

Steve Kitchen, Director at Willmott Dixon said: “We are delighted to be celebrating the topping out of a further 102 homes which we are delivering for the Gascoigne neighbourhood. It is fantastic to see the transformation being made across Gascoigne East and we look forward to seeing these sustainable, affordable homes continue to develop as we progress over the coming months.”
