Senior Sustainability Manager
Job Summary
Be First is looking to recruit a Senior Sustainability Manager within the Design team. This is an exciting opportunity to join an ambitious team that is part of a pioneering urban regeneration company. You will be responsible for coordinating sustainability ambitions across Be First including meeting the Council’s zero carbon commitments. The role will include working on a rich mix of project types from the small sites programme to large estate regeneration projects and town centre mixed-use developments.

Be First is a pioneering URBAN REGENERATION COMPANY wholly owned by Barking and Dagenham Council and operating independently. Our mission is to capitalise on the borough’s position as London’s best investment and development opportunity to accelerate growth. We aim to help deliver 50,000 new homes and 20,000 jobs in the next 20 years.
In 2020 LBBD declared a climate emergency and an ambition to be zero carbon by 2030 along with the green capital of the capital. The Senior Sustainability Manager will embed the Council’s sustainability aims across Be First’s Place and Design and Delivery teams. A key part of the position is to implement Be First and LBBD’s zero carbon and sustainability strategies through Be First’s work.
The successful candidate will be commercially minded and able to balance financial constraints with the ambitions for sustainable design. A key requirement is the ability to apply the ambitions across a large housing programme and third party developers.
The role will involve implementing Be First’s sustainability strategy, attending design team meetings for Be First projects, working with our contractor partners to deliver sustainability objectives, working with various Council departments on energy and technical specification, supporting the formation of planning policy and attending pre-application meetings on third party applicants. Excellent project management skills are essential to manage the variety of projects with the programme.
Person specification
We are looking for a Senior Sustainability Manager with a range of skills and
attributes including:
• A passion for high quality and sustainable design and placemaking
• Excellent project management skills and experience leading a large programme of sustainability projects
• Experience of working on complex projects in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver innovative sustainable development
• Demonstrable development experience across RIBA stages with at least 5 years professional experience
• A passion for material innovation and a technical understanding of sustainable materials and products is beneficial
• Experience of developing net zero carbon buildings
• An understanding of Passivhaus principles
• An understanding of sustainable energy solutions including heat networks and low carbon energy solutions
• A thorough understanding current sustainability policy and guidance
• Interest in planning policy and is able to demonstrate their passion for environmental conservation, through active strategies to combat climate change and promote sustainability
• Experience of working with building management companies and residents to monitor building performance is advantageous
