Job Summary

We are looking for a creative urban designer or architect to lead the work of the in-house design team, developing site briefs, capacity studies and frameworks. The role will also include design management on Be First’s new build housing programme. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and ambitious team working across planning, development and construction to support Be First’s regeneration and placemaking programme. Design innovation, sustainability, creating social value and using modern methods of construction are key principles driving the team. You will be working on a mix of projects ranging from our small sites programme to large estate regeneration projects, town centre mixed-use developments and industrial intensification. You will share our passion and enthusiasm for Barking and Dagenham and creating great places through design and development.

Job description

We are looking for a designer with five to ten years experience with a range of skills including:

  • proven experience leading the design of projects of various sizes from small sites to large masterplans and frameworks
  • demonstrable workplace experience developing architectural and urban design projects and clearly communicating these through drawings and presentation material
  • undertaking feasibility and capacity studies for complex urban sites
  • excellent autocad, sketchup and Adobe Creative Cloud
  • working with external design teams and managing design development from inception to delivery
  • understanding of BIM and BIM strategy
  • understanding of modern methods of construction and its application to a large residential new build programme
  • good knowledge of UK construction and best practice
  • great communicator
  • good team player with flexible mindset

Person specification

Skills and competencies required:

  • Outstanding design skills including strong graphic skills for communicating urban design and architectural proposals
  • Hold a recognised professional qualification such as architect, urban designer or landscape architect with extensive senior level experience of designing urban design, housing layouts and architectural projects
  • Excellent understanding of technical, regulatory, environmental and political issues impacting on the successful delivery of local authority housing and mixed-use developments
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation and practices around financial and resource planning, to deliver against demanding performance and quality standards
  • Excellent leadership skills and comfortable leading projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Understanding of DfMA and MMC processes within residential design and construction
  • Knowledge of BIM and BIM processes is advantageous
  • Able to self-manage and work with the minimum of supervision
  • At ease in the presence of company directors, senior client representatives and able to command a sense of personal professional gravitas without being overbearing
  • Have a corporate approach to managing her/his areas of responsibility, seeing the bigger picture, supporting the SMT and managers in the organisation to achieve their objectives
  • Able to work under pressure, organise and prioritise own work and that of others, ensuring agreed programmes and project requirements are met and customer demands accommodated
  • Demonstrates an understanding of equality and diversity and shows experience of embedding a fair and ethical approach within a team and wider organisation
